Celebrating India’s Harvest Festivals at ISW Cultural and Language School
Our students recently participated in a culturally enriching assembly focused on the
harvest festivals of Sankranti, Lohri, and Pongal, thoughtfully presented by Jaimeen ji,
Avinash ji, and Richa ji. The assembly helped students understand the importance of
these festivals and how they are celebrated across different regions of India.
Sankranti is celebrated in many parts of India as a festival of gratitude for the harvest
and a time to welcome positivity, prosperity, and new beginnings. For Gujaratis, Makar
Sankranti (Uttarayan) is a joyful celebration of harvest, community, and tradition,
centered around kite flying, special foods, and togetherness. Kite flying is the highlight.
The sky is filled with colorful kites, and families gather on rooftops for friendly
competitions.

Lohri, primarily celebrated in North India, honors the harvest of winter crops. Lohri
(Eve of Sankranti): Celebrated with bonfires, folk songs, and dances (bhangra and
giddha). People offer peanuts, popcorn, and sweets to the fire,
Pongal, a major festival in South India, especially Tamil Nadu, is a four-day celebration
dedicated to thanking the Sun God, farmers, and cattle for a successful harvest. The
preparation of the Pongal dish represents prosperity and the joy of sharing.
Through this assembly, students learned that although these festivals are celebrated
differently across regions, they all share common values—gratitude, respect for nature,
community bonding, and cultural unity. Such learning experiences are central to the
mission of the ISW Cultural and Language School.
As part of our ongoing cultural curriculum, students will continue with bhajan practice,
nurturing a deeper connection to tradition through music and collective participation.
We thank our presenters for their time and dedication in making this assembly both
informative and meaningful for our students.

We were fortunate to have Brianna , Arianna and Ryan come back as usual to tell the story of Xmas and how it is celebrated. Topics covered were Birth of Jesus Christ, Santa Claus popularity and why poinsettia plants are meaningful etc. When we asked the students how they celebrate Xmas, most said they make cookies and decorate their Tree

The Michael kids were part of ISW Tamil School many years ago and are now are in college at WPI and working adults at TJ Maxx. We are fortunate they come back every year and volunteer their time to share the Xmas story. Its encouraging to see our school alumni return and give back to their community, and be role models for the current school kids.

November 16th – Thanksgiving Craft
Our students have been busy creating beautiful Thanksgiving cards under the guidance of our dedicated art teachers, Bindiya Jain and Divya Gahlot. Each card reflects creativity, patience, and attention to detail. Activities like these help students express their thoughts and feelings, improve their artistic skills, and develop a sense of accomplishment. Creating these cards takes significant effort from both students and teachers. From planning the project and preparing materials to guiding students step by step, a lot of thought and care goes into ensuring every child can participate and succeed. We are especially proud that all our teachers are volunteers, sharing their time and skills to nurture our students’ love for culture and creativity.
November 23rd – Jeopardy Part 2: India – Geography and Culture
Our students enjoyed an interactive session exploring India’s diverse geography and rich cultural heritage through Jeopardy. Thanks to our student teachers, Ishita and Nimish, for leading this engaging activity. Games like these strengthen listening skills, teamwork, and cultural awareness, while making learning fun and memorable.

Yoga Session

The day concluded with a calming Yoga session from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM, led by Alka Ji and Narendra Ji. Yoga encourages mindfulness, body awareness, and relaxation, helping students connect with themselves and stay balanced in both mind and body.

Student Perspective
Rishi, age 9, shared, “I really enjoy these activities. They help me learn about India and our culture, and I get to work with other kids and feel part of the community.” We are deeply grateful to all our teachers and volunteers for their dedication and creativity, which make these activities possible. A special thanks to our principal Ruchi Ji and Shiamin Ji for their constant guidance and support, helping us provide a nurturing and enriching environment for our students.

October 26, 2025 – Halloween Celebration

Our Halloween Sunday was full of excitement as Swati Agrawal and Divya Gahlot led a fun and colorful Halloween parade along with creative games for the children.
Students came dressed in their favorite costumes and enjoyed the festive activities together. Swati ji and Divya ji also brought yummy treats, making the day extra special for the kids.
A big thank you to both teachers for organizing such a joyful and thoughtful Halloween celebration!

Celebrating Indian Heritage: Garba Workshop, Navaratri Golu Presentation and Diwali Crafts

The ISW Language School was filled with festive joy and cultural learning over the past few weeks as students participated in themed sessions celebrating Garba, Navaratri, Gandhi Jayanti, and Diwali.

A Joyful Start to Our New School Year!

What an exciting beginning to our new year of language and cultural learning! This year we proudly welcome 145 students — our largest registration ever! The joy of seeing our students return after the summer, along with many new faces, filled our assembly with energy and enthusiasm. Classes have begun in Telugu, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Kannada. For adults, Hindi and Telugu continue online with flexible scheduling — ensuring learning fits into everyone’s routine.

Our very first assembly of the year was truly special. School Principal & Chair, Ruchi Chauhan, and School Co-Chair, Shiamin Melville, led the gathering with warmth and encouragement. To celebrate, students took part in a vibrant Garba dance workshop, guided by Shaivi, Kajal, Vaishali, and Bhaarti ji. Grouped by age, children danced, laughed, and immersed themselves in the lively rhythms — setting the stage for a year filled with fun and cultural connection.

None of this would be possible without our dedicated teachers, parent volunteers, and families. Your time, commitment, and love for our mission make this community thrive. And to all the parents — thank you for bringing your children each week and making language and culture such an integral part of their upbringing.

Here’s to a year of learning, tradition, joy, and togetherness!

September 28th – Navaratri Golu Presentation & Meditation Activities

A true highlight of the season was the Navaratri Golu presentation by our student Rishi Muthu, accompanied by his dad, Muthu. Rishi impressed everyone with his confident narration and thoughtful explanation of the story and significance behind Navaratri, while Muthu guided the audience through the spiritual meaning of the Golu display. Their engaging and well-prepared presentation stood out for its depth, teamwork, and cultural insight.

The same day also featured a delightful session of meditation and interactive games with Kavishwar Wagholikar, helping students connect mindfulness with fun.

October 5th – Gandhi Jayanti & Yoga Session

Our student teacher Nimish Kunte led a deeply informative session on Gandhi Jayanti, reminding students about Gandhiji’s values of peace, truth, and non-violence. This was followed by yoga and stretching with Alka ji and Narendra ji, which brought calm focus to the morning.

October 12th – Diwali Assembly & Crafts

The celebration continued with a beautiful Diwali presentation designed by Yukta Singh and presented by Ishita Agarwal and Swati Agarwal. Students then expressed their creativity through Mandala-inspired Diya painting, filling the room with color, joy, and artistic energy. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teachers — Divya Gahlot, Swati Agarwal, Sonia Gera, Anjali Paranjpe, and Uma ji — for leading these events with enthusiasm, and to our student teachers and parents for their support.

These sessions beautifully reflected the spirit of ISW Language School — where students not only learn a language but also live their culture through creativity, confidence, and community.

A Joyful Close to the ISW Cultural School and Language Academic Year

On May 18th, the ISW community gathered once again for the grand finale of the school year—the much-anticipated Annual Day Celebration. This vibrant event was graced by the presence of esteemed speakers including Ms. Ruchi Chauhan (ISW School Chair), Ms. Shiamin Melville (ISW School Co-director), and Dr. Jagan Srinivasan (ISW President), each of thom delivered inspiring messages that reflected on the cultural, educational, and communal impact of ISW’s mission.

The day also held a special tribute to Ms. Nisha Bawa, whose dedicated years of service to the Language and Cultural School were honored with a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony. As Nisha prepares to move to Texas, her legacy and commitment will continue to resonate within the hearts of students, teachers, and families alike.

The Annual Day performances were a colorful showcase of the students' linguistic journeys throughout the year. Each child participated in an act that corresponded with the language they were enrolled in—ranging from skits and speeches to songs, dances, and traditional recitations. These performances not only displayed their growing fluency but also celebrated the rich diversity of Indian languages and cultures represented within our school.

Following the performances, students were awarded Certificates of Completion, symbolizing their progress and dedication. This joyful occasion culminated in a delightful potluck lunch, where families came together to share food, laughter, and stories—capping off a year of learning and connection on a delicious note. It was a tremendous success and a deeply fulfilling year for all involved—teachers, students, and parents alike. As this chapter closes, we look forward to welcoming new and returning families when ISW Cultural and Language school reopens in September 2025.

On May 11th, in celebration of Mother’s Day, the ISW Language and Cultural School organized a heartfelt craft activity where children lovingly created handmade greeting cards for their mothers. With all supplies thoughtfully provided, this touching initiative allowed students to express their love and gratitude in creative, meaningful ways. The room buzzed with warmth and enthusiasm as little hands shaped colors into memories that would surely be cherished by their mothers for years to come.

Donation for Teacher Appreciation 2025
Hi Parents, the academic year draws to an end. Many of you wanted to show your appreciation for the great volunteer work done by the ISW Language Teachers, Assembly Teachers and Staff. Our school has been going strong for 33+ years with the support of our teachers, so thank you to them.

Should you wish to donate to a collection for teachers appreciation, you may do so at this link by the end of June 2025 and once thank you for your support. Funds will be donated as per teachers choice.

In 2020 $900 was donated on behalf of teachers to Greater Worcester Community Foundation GWCF for the 'First Responders Fund'.

In 2021 The donation collected for 2021 went towards the ISW building expansion fund. Once again thanks to all the teachers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

In 2022 The donation $670 collected went to World Central Kitchen for their work in Ukraine, and the remaining amount was donated to local charities like Abbey House, Floral Street School(for a family in need), Northborough Junior Woman club (Turkey earthquake relief fund) and Senior Center In Shrewsbury(Food Pantry)

2023, we collected approx $500, and amount was shared between $250 to Shrewsbury Senior Cnter, $150 to Abbey House shelter for Women, $50 to Beal School and $50 Floral School food bank

2024, we collected approx $300, and gift cards were purchased and donated to Abbey House shelter for Women.

ISW School - celebrates its first ever Indian Street Games: Kho, Gullidanda and more

ISW School - celebrates its first ever Street Games from India

On May 4th, the ISW Cultural and Language School hosted its first-ever Sports Day Assembly—a joyful and vibrant event made possible by the dedication of the ISW team and an incredible group of parent volunteers.

The day brought students and families together in a spirited celebration of traditional Indian street games. The children participated in a variety of classic favorites including Kho-Kho, Lattoo (spinning top), Kancha (marbles), Pathang (kite flying), Lagori (seven stones), Kith Kith (hopscotch), and Gilli Danda. These beloved games, rich with cultural heritage, offered a fun and meaningful experience for everyone involved.

It wasn’t just the children who had a blast—parents were equally engaged and nostalgic, many of them fondly recalling their own childhood experiences. The field was full of laughter, friendly encouragement, and spontaneous participation from all ages. By the end of the day, several kids excitedly shared that they wanted to try these games at home with their siblings and friends, inspired by the fun they had.

To keep the energy up, munchkins were provided as snacks—much to the delight of the kids! First aid volunteers were also present throughout the day, helping to ensure a safe environment for all participants.

Muthu Rajasekaran (ISW Assistant Treasurer) played a key role in organizing and leading the parents group. Ms. Ruchi Chauhan (ISW School Chair & Co-Director) and Ms. Shiamin Melville (Co-Director) brought the creative idea for the event and provided valuable guidance to the team throughout the planning process.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the amazing parent volunteers whose time and effort made this event truly special: Shashi, Abhay, Jaimin, Neeraj, Shaivi, Sonia, Prachi, Divya V, Divya M, Nidhi, Arnaz, Komal, Ranjana, Meenakshi, Kavishwar, Anil, Deepak, Kiran, Vivek, Kaustubh, Ramakanth, Dhivesh, Tejashri, Vaibhavi, and Rashmi.

The turnout was fantastic, and the event was a huge success. None of this would have been possible without the tireless support of our amazing volunteers and the ISW Cultural and Language School team. Your efforts made this inaugural Sports Day a memorable and heartwarming experience for the entire community.

March & April Highlights at ISW Language and Cultural Class

The months of March and April have been a whirlwind of activity at ISW Language and Cultural School. Our young learners have been immersed in a dynamic blend of language development and vibrant cultural experiences. From honing their linguistic skills to celebrating colorful Indian traditions, the energy has been contagious!

On March 30th, students delved into the rich customs of Gudi Padwa and Ugadi. A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Aditya Ambade and Mr. Avinash Prakash for their engaging and insightful presentations on these festivals. The children were fascinated to discover the similarities between the two celebrations, fostering a deeper appreciation for India’s diverse heritage.

On April 6th, Ms. Sonia Gera captivated the students with a beautiful presentation on Ram Navami. The session was followed by an enthralling introduction to the classical dance form of Kathak, conducted by the graceful Ms. Pinkini and Ms. Radhika. The rhythmic footwork and expressive storytelling truly mesmerized the kids.

On April 13th, we celebrated the Tamil New Year with a wonderful presentation by Ms. Divya Muthu. Students learned about the cultural significance of the Tamil calendar and explored how solar and lunar calendars influence festivals both in India and around the world. The day continued with a much-anticipated Meditation and Games session led by Mr. Kavishwar, whose previous session had already won the hearts of our students.

With the academic year drawing to a close, our students are also preparing for their final exams, while looking forward to exciting events like ISW Sports Day and Annual Day. Their enthusiasm never wanes—they continue to explore, grow, and shine in every opportunity.

A big thank you to our dedicated teachers, volunteers, supportive parents, and the incredible ISW management team for making all of this possible.

ISW School Assembly Holi & Navroz & Fun Meditation with Games

A heartfelt thank you to all the parents who continue to participate and volunteer at the ISW Cultural and Language School. Your support is invaluable in making these events meaningful and enriching for our children.

On March 16th, Mr. Abhay Thakur gave a wonderful Holi presentation for the children. He shared the story of Holika and explained the significance of the Holi celebration. To make the session even more engaging, he included fun Holi trivia, which kept the children actively involved and excited to learn.

His presentation was followed by an interactive session of meditation and games led byMr. Kavishwar, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. These were some of childhood games that were played in India and the parents reminisced about the fun memories from the past.

On March 23rd, Ms. Arnaz Avasia gave an insightful presentation on Nowruz, highlighting its significance and traditions. For many in the audience, this was their first introduction to Zoroastrianism and its celebrations. The presentation was highly informative, sparking curiosity and many questions from the children about the history of Zoroastrianism.

At ISW Cultural and Language School, we place great emphasis on understanding the history and significance of various cultural celebrations. The inclusivity in learning about festivals from different states and religions across India is truly commendable. Ms. RuchiChauhan and Ms. Shiamin Melville have always championed this perspective, ensuring that our children gain a well-rounded appreciation of diverse traditions. The cultural classes for children have always been engaging and interesting, and parents frequently express their appreciation for these enriching experiences.

Following the Nowruz presentation, we celebrated Holi, an annual tradition at the ISW Language and Cultural School. Organic Holi colors were provided, allowing children and parents to come together and enjoy the festivities. The Holi celebration is a joyous occasion that strengthens family bonds and brings the community together in the spirit of love and happiness.

ISW School Saraswati puja

The India Society of Worcester (ISW) Cultural and Language School once again honored the beloved tradition of Saraswathi Puja on March 9, 2025, bringing together families, students, and devotees on a celebration of knowledge and the arts. Deeply rooted in cultural and spiritual significance, the event highlighted the community’s dedication to learning and wisdom under the blessings of Goddess Saraswathi.

This long-standing tradition at ISW has been nurtured under the presence and guidanceof Ms. Carolyn and Ms. Shiamin for over 30 years—cherished by past, present, and future students alike. In preparation for the big day, Ms. Sonia, Ms. Sarita, and Ms. Anju taught the children bhajans (Sharda Stavan and Hey Ram, Hey Ram), which they recited during the puja.

As in previous years, the puja commenced in a serene and reverent atmosphere, with families arriving in vibrant traditional attire. Children and adults participated in prayers and bhajan recitals, filling the space with devotional melodies that set the tone for the day. The rituals were conducted with great care, reinforcing the values of education and enlightenment that Goddess Saraswathi symbolizes.

A special thanks to Ms. Carolyn for always bringing in the idols and decorations, creating an atmosphere of serenity reminiscent of a temple. Each child received a plate prepared by Beena Krishnan with flowers, a diya, and an idol of Goddess Saraswathi before the puja ceremony, which was led by Mrs. Anju Shukla. As the Guru Mantra and Saraswathi Shlokas were chanted, the children carefully took flower petals and kumkum to offer their prayers. Then, in a single file, they joined Ms. Sonia, Ms. Sarita, and Master Nimish Kunte in reciting the bhajans (Sharda Stavan and Hey Ram, Hey Ram). Their melodious recital was a joy to hear, witnessed by parents and family members who had gathered for the occasion. The children also recited the shlokas alongside Ms. Anju and Ms. Anupama.

The event also featured wonderful solo performances by a few children, including traditional dances, bhajan singing, and shloka recitations, all showcasing their enthusiasm and dedication.

Ms. Ruchi and Ms. Shiamin addressed the puja audience and thanked the teachers and everyone who had helped put together this wonderful event. At the end of the ceremony the children along with their family members collected the Prashad. As conversations flowed, families expressed their gratitude for yet another meaningful celebration that strengthened their spiritual and cultural bonds.

This Saraswati Puja serves as a reminder that education and wisdom are lifelong pursuits, nurtured through devotion and shared traditions. A sincere thank you to all the teachers, volunteers, and parents whose dedication is deeply appreciate every step of a child’s spiritual and cultural upbringing.

First and foremost, thanks to all those who contributed their donation to the Giving tree which was set up at the school lobby. Every year we collect new mittens, hats, and/or Walmart/Target gift cards and donate to shelters around us.

The last few weeks have been very productive and there has been a flurry of activities (and snow too) for the kids at the ISW language and cultural school. On January 5, 2025, kids enjoyed Lezim hands on assembly performed by our Marathi teachers. Kids were given an opportunity to learn how to handle Lezim and dance to the beats. After the fun activity the kids got to relax and rejuvenate their mind and body with Yoga session conducted by our very own Narendra ji. Our heartfelt thanks to all the Marathi teachers and volunteers and Narendra ji.

On January 12 th 2025, the kids had a chance to learn about the harvest festival and how it is being celebrated in different parts of India. We extend our thanks to ISW school parents who took their time to prepare and present on the harvest festival - Sankranti with Aditya Ambade,

Lohri with Komal Thapar, and Pongal with Muthu Rajasekaran and Rishi Muthukumaran. We encourage more parents to participate and share their knowledge not only with the kids but also with other fellow parents. Following the presentation on harvest festival, the kids practiced bhajans for the upcoming Saraswati pooja in March. Special thanks to Ms. Sonia Gera for teaching the bhajans to the kids. After the assembly the kids were given Prashad offered by Aditya Ambade in the wake of the harvest festival celebration. On January 26 th 2025, a special India Republic Day presentation was performed by our senior students (Hindi 4 Ms. Sonia Gera's class). During the presentation the kids asked lot of questions and the senior students explained them very well. Kudos to the senior students! Following the presentation the kids designed a beautiful craft commemorating the India Republic Day. Special thanks to Ms. Bindiya Jain for teaching the craft to the kids.

On February 8 th , 2025, ISW hosted ‘The harvest festival’ at St. Johns school in Shrewsbury. The event was a great success. It was a houseful event with varied age group displaying their singing and dancing skills in both compete and non-competing categories. Of course, without a surprise, our ISW language and cultural school kids and some parents showcased their dancing skills, and in addition few teachers rendered their singing talent as well. Special thanks to Tanvi Manjrekar & Sakshi Dindore (former ISW School dance teachers) for teaching dance to the kids. On 24 th November 2024, after the language class session, kids participated in an artwork themed on Thanksgiving which was conducted by art teacher Bindiya Jain. Using the ISW school supplies each kid designed a Thanksgiving card and wrote what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving. It was nice to see the kids in action and helping each other to complete their assigned tasks. Thanks much to Bindiya Jain!

I’m thankful to all the teachers, volunteers, parents, and to the ISW management for their commitment and dedication towards the welfare of our kids. I’m glad to be part of the ISW family, and I’m sure every parent and ISW member feel the same.

Kids were very engaged in the 3D demo by Ashish Cowlagi and IYG volunteer Rohan Savla

On 17 th November 2024, after the language class session, the kids enjoyed a demonstration of 3D printing workshop conducted by Ashish Cowlagi. The kids were enthralled to learn more about 3D printing and some of the kids even received a 3D printed souvenir for asking unique and interesting questions. In this event the ISW kids did a dance performance which they practiced for weeks. Special thanks to the choreographer Tanvi Manjrekar, and coordinators Ruchi Chauhan and Shiamin Melville, and the parent volunteers for their dedication and commitment in making this event a successful and memorable one.On 10 th November 2024, after the language class session, the kids embarked on a musical treat. f the percussion instrument called Tabla. Jyothin Basrur taught kids how to play tabla and kept them engaged throughout the whole session. The last few days have been very busy for both the kids and ISW management. Starting with Diwali celebration at Worcester Public Library on 30th October 2024. This event is the first of its kind for ISW school to embrace the significance of Diwali festival to the public audience. It was a well-orchestrated event conducted by Ruchi Chauhan and Shiamin Melville, along with ISW kids, parent volunteers and activity coordinators. The event catered to both kids and elder crowd with variety of activities such as a Diwali themed rangoli coloring activities for kids, Bollywood and traditional dance performance, Henna application, Diya painting, a presentation on Diwali tradition and the significance of celebrating Diwali, Saree draping, and not to mention a dedicated stall to entice the taste buds of the audience with Indian sweets and snacks. On October 6 th 2024, after the language class session the kids enjoyed two unique activities. The first one was Children stories read by author Ms. Minocha. It was great sing along session with the kids explaining the benefits of veggies and the importance of chanting the script ‘Om’. Kids loved it and performed beautifully. Next was the Carnatic Vocal Music presentation by teacher Ms. Bhuvana Ganesh and Ms. Tanvi. It was a great rendition on the basics of Carnatic music and their similarities with other genres. Not only the kids but also the parents enjoyed the music session immensely. A heartfelt thanks to Ms. Minocha, Ms. Bhuvana and Ms. Tanvi!

It was great to see the kids enjoy these extracurricular sessions, and we have more to come throughout this academic year. And for the parents, it would be nice to ensure to ask your kids about these sessions and give us your feedback. The feedback helps us to improve future sessions. After a great summer, the ISW language school stepped on to its 2024-2025 academic year on September 21 and 22, 2024. First and foremost, thanks to all the teachers, the School Chair Ms. Ruchi Chauhan and Ms. Shiamin Melville, and student volunteers for their selfless year around commitment to teach our kids and ensure they excel in language academics, Indian culture and social behavior.

We were pleased to see more kids enrolled this year which is great thing for the school and our Indian community. Last two weeks have been busy for both teachers and the kids. The teachers coordinated their classrooms and setting up Whatsapp group for parent interaction. Old students were happy to see their classmates and cherished their summer activities and gatherings with their friends, and new students seemed equally excited as well while adjusting to a new routine. And of course, parents had a good chit chat/meet & greet with their peers in the kitchen room, which is a good opportunity to socialize with one another whilst the kids were enjoying the classes

On September 22 nd 2024, in addition to language class the kids enjoyed a Garba dance session along with teachers and some parents. Special thanks to Vaishali ji and Kajal ji for their time and effort in planning and teaching the kids the basics of Garba. What a great way to start the academic year! On September 29 th 2024, we also had two great events. The first one was Gandhi Jayanti assembly with master Nimish Kunte – indeed it was great presentation. Nimish explained the story of Mahatma Gandhi ji so nicely and detailed, which the kids enjoyed and asked questions to know more about the Father of our nation. What more can you ask for a beautiful way to commemorate our beloved Mahatma Gandhi ji’s birthday. After that presentation, kids practiced yoga. Thanks to Alka ji for her continued support for a fun filled yoga session to always keep the kids body and mind on a balanced state. A heartfelt thanks to both Nimish and Ms. Alka!

ISW Language school kids (see below) sang the National Anthem of India gracefully showing their respect, love and pride. Special thanks to Ruchi Chauhan for being the conductor and coordinating the practice sessions alongside with Ms. Shiamin Melville, which helped to them to sing comfortably in front of a big audience. After the national anthem kids stood in front of the players tunnel and gave high-five to WooSox players. Finally the kids enjoyed the game with some burgers and fries, and left with a good memory with their family and friends. Thanks again to all the parents for their time and effort supporting the Indian Heritage event. ISW School Annual Day program 2024

At ISW school the Annual Day was celebrated on May 19, 2024. This was a special one as we embarked on our language school journey for more than 30 years of school program - whilst this is a great milestone we never stop aiming for many more successful years and creating a positive impact on every ISW kids’ life. The agenda for the annual day celebration was indeed a packed one. Firstly, we had the National anthem and welcome speech by Ruchi Chauhan. Followed by students’ performance assigned for their class and then received their certificates plus prizes for attendance. Thanks to Ms. Carolyn for her continued support and preparing the school participation certificates. Parents also had the opportunity to review the final score of their kid’s annual test.

Next Sanjay Shah, ISW Gala Committee addressed the crowd about the upcoming ISW 2024 Gala on September 19, 2024.

Last two performance were the highlights of the day – one was a surprise performance by the ISW school teachers, and the other one was the kids group song “We are the World” which was beautifully orchestrated.

The annual day celebration ended with a tasty Indian potluck feast prepared by the parents, which the kids enjoyed thoroughly. Below you will find the link to the pictures. April has been a busy month at ISW language and cultural class. On one hand the kids were busy focusing on the language skills and on the other they were spending quality time learning Indian festivals, Bollywood dance and performing talent shows. They always surprise us which makes ISW a unique place for kids to shine and nurture as they grow.

On April 7th, kids learnt about Gudi Padwa and Ugadi festivals. Thanks to our parents Mr. Aditya Ambade and Ms. Yamuna Palia for presenting on Gudi Padwa and Ugadi festivals respectively. The kids were pleasantly surprised to know how similar both were being celebrated. After that presentation, our beloved Mr. Narendra Karapakula conducted the yoga session, and the kids enjoyed a nice stretch before their spring break.

After a nice, short and sweet spring break, kids returned to the class and enjoyed a fun filled dance workshop performed by Ms. Sheetal Kochavara who conducts BrightXpressions - a dance school specializing in Indian classical, hip-hop, Bollywood, and Hollywood dance forms. Kids enjoyed her vibe thoroughly. Do check her out!.

On April 28th , around 18 kids participated in the talent show. Every year the kids keep surprising us with their amazing talents. From singing, dance, standup, solving Rubik’s cube, playing musical instruments and much more they astound us with an array of skills. Here is a glimpse of their performance.

With a lot of tasks lined up including final exam for the academic year and gearing up for the Annual day celebration on May 19, kids never get tired and keep exploring more. Once again thanks to all the teachers, volunteers, parents, and finally the ISW management for making this happen.

Donation for Teacher Appreciation 2024

Hi Parents, it is that time of year again, the academic year draws to an end. Many of you wanted to show your appreciation for the great volunteer work done by the ISW Language Teachers, Assembly Teachers and Staff. Our school has been going strong for 30+ years with the support of our teachers, so thank you to them.

Should you wish to donate to a collection for teachers appreciation, you may do so at this link by the end of June 2024 and once thank you for your support. Funds will be donated as per teachers choice.

In 2020 $900 was donated on behalf of teachers to Greater Worcester Community Foundation GWCF for the 'First Responders Fund'.

In 2021 The donation collected for 2021 went towards the ISW building expansion fund. Once again thanks to all the teachers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

In 2022 The donation $670 collected went to World Central Kitchen for their work in Ukraine, and the remaining amount was donated to local charities like Abby House, Floral Street School(for a family in need), Northborough Junior Woman club (Turkey earthquake relief fund) and Senior Center In Shrewsbury(Food Pantry)

2023, we collected approx $500, and amount was shared between $250 to Shrewsbury Senior Cnter, $150 to Abbey House shelter for Women, $50 to Beal School and $50 Floral School food bank

ISW Teachers Meeting & Holi/Easter Egg Hunt

On March 10 th 2024, ISW school had their Annual Teacher gathering where teachers discussed school agenda Items and spent some time socializing with other families. After the meet and greet the families took part in fun games followed by lunch.

At ISW the kids celebrated Holi and Easter on March 31 st , 2024. Special thanks to Ms. Shiamin Melville and Master Kunal Chauhan for presenting and sharing their experiences on Easter tradition and Holi celebration respectively.

As the presentation was ongoing the Easter bunny left a surprise treat for all the kids. After the presentation, the kids came out and got excited with not just one but two surprises – lot full of eggs and a beautiful sunny weather. The kids couldn’t wait anymore to see what treats the bunny had left for them. Thanks to Easter bunny for leaving enough treat for all, and the kids made sure their peers got the treats as well.

After munching the treats, the kids moved to the next station where they formed a line to receive the organic dry color packets and pichkari (water gun). Special mention to our parents Muthu Rajasekaran, Abhay Thakur and Anjali Paranjpe for bagging the Holi colors and colored water. It was a great sight to see beautiful colored faces of both parents and kids having fun together.

As a parent, I was able to revive my childhood days celebrating

Holi and I’m sure other parents experienced the same looking at their kids. You know that the job done was great when your kid tells you that he had the best time, and loves coming more to attend the ISW language and cultural classes. Thanks to all the teachers, volunteers, parents, and last but not the least the ISW management for making this happen.

Carnatic music lecture/demonstration by Dr. Ramachandran Balakrishna at the Cultural School Assembly today.

Dr. Ramachandran Balakrishna learns Carnatic violin from Shri. K.V.S. Vinay. He had his initial training with Shri. Nagarajan (a disciple of Padma Bhushan Shri. Lalgudi G. Jayaraman) and subsequently with Madurai Shri. P.V. Raghavan before moving to the Boston area. Ramachandran also works on his music with his mother, Smt. Sudha Balakrishnan. Ramachandran is a Principal Transportation Scientist in the Boston area.

As we embark into the beginning of new year 2024 kids learnt about harvest festivals, namely Pongal, Sankranti, Lohri and how it is commonly celebrated across different parts of India. Thanks to all the parents who volunteered to teach and share their experiences of the harvest festival.

At ISW, the Saraswathi puja was celebrated on March 10, 2024. The celebration at ISW is a long-standing tradition that has been cultivated under the presence and guidance of Ms. Carolyn and Ms. Shiamin for the past 30 plus years – which has been and will be cherished by the past, present and future students of ISW. Prior to the big day, Ms. Sonia and Ms. Sarita taught the bhajans (Sharda Stavan and Hey Ram, Hey Ram) to the kids that they will be reciting on the day of puja. Amidst their busy schedule of language class and practicing bhajans, few kids even signed up to perform solo performance during the puja.

On the day of celebration, kids wore traditional Indian attire and were excited to offer their devotion to Goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts. Special thanks to Ms. Carolyn for the idols and decorations – a serenity and glimpse one could only experience in a temple.

Each kid was given a plate with some flowers, diya, and an idol of Saraswathi maa, and then the puja ceremony preceded by Mrs. Anju Shukla. As the Guru Mantra and Saraswathi Shloka’s went on, thekids meticulously took the flower petals and kum kum and offered their prayers to Saraswathi maa. Then in one single file, the kids along with Ms. Sonia and Ms. Sarita recited the bhajans (Sharda Stavan and Hey Ram, Hey Ram), which was pleasant to hear and was witnessed by the parents who graced the occasion with their family members. After the prayers, the solo performance of the kids was conducted. To our surprise, many kids who didn’t initially sign up for the solo performance also showed interest and were given a chance to showcase their spirituality – Afterall what better occasion can erupt their confidence than the day of wisdom and knowledge is being worshipped.

The enchantment of Goddess Saraswathi Maa’s songs, slogans and dance performance by the kids filled the room with eternal and divine aura. At the end the kids received blessings from the teacher and had the sacred thread tied onto their wrist, and then proceeded to collect the prashad.

Overall, this year’s Saraswati puja celebration was a huge success, and once again thanks to all the teachers and parents whose effort is much appreciated in every step of the kid’s nourishment and traditional upbringing. Together we can make our community and culture stronger!

ISW School Giving Tree 2024

It will be donated to Abby's House, which is Worcester’s largest provider of affordable housing specifically designed to meet the needs of women and children. Fun Winter assemblies at ISW School plus pictures

On December 2, we had the Michael family come in and share the Christmas story (this is a tradition now as they have been coming in for 8 years). Also the kids enjoyed the treats.

We also sang Christmas carols with the Dhol Tasha team. Thanks to Rajesh and team for the beautiful fusion. They also took request from kids, and it was a very festive environment Link to Xmas Dhol pics

On November 19, ISW Students continued with their lessons each weekend. During assembly, Bindiya Jain and Mrunal Khandkar taught the children how to use the Mandala Art technique to decorate their Diwali diyas.

The following weekend Vijay Gupta, renowned violinist, performed two scintillating pieces, one based on western classical music and the other, composed by his wife, Reena Esmail, blending Hindustani classical style. He also engaged the children describing his own life story growing up in the US and answering many curious questions from the kids.

Later, the children went outside to build forts, a tradition in some parts of Maharashtra at Diwali.

Vijay Gupta Violinist to visit, Text books distributed and Adult Sanskrit classes

ISW School will be hosting Vijay Gupta, violinist and Music Worcester's artist in residence, for the school Assembly on November 5, all are welcome. Do RSVP.

We have started school with a flourish, currently we have 131 +13 (Sanskrit) students enrolled. Its great that we have a higher number of younger students than any of the previous years.

Last Tuesday we started our online sanskrit class for Adults. We have got decent registration for our pilot program and are excited to introduce this new language as a part of ISW School.

Last Sunday we also distributed our textbooks to students. Students were excited to get new books to continue their learning.

भारतीय भोजन अपने मसालेदार और विशिष्ट स्वाद के लिये विश्वप्रसिध्द है! भारतीय संस्कृति में खाने में बहुत विविधता है। मसालेदार खाना मेरा पसंदीदा खाना है। मुझे अपनी मॉं को भारतीय खाना जैसे रोटी,सब्ज़ी, दाल, चावल,सब्ज़ियाँ बनाने में मदद करना अच्छा लगता है ।

मैं जो भारतीय कपड़े पहनती हूँ, उन में कढाई, ज़री, शीशे के साथ जटिल और रंगीन डिज़ाइन होते हैं। ये हमेशा हर अवसर के लिये सुंदर और आकर्षक दिखते हैं! मैं भारतीय कार्यक्रमों में भारतीय कपड़े पहनती हूँ और इससे मुझे अपनी संस्कृति से जुड़े रहने में मदद मिलती है।

भारतीय संस्कृति में धार्मिक गतिविधियों का एक विशेष स्थान है। ये मुझे उन देवताओं से जोड़े रखती हैं जिनकी मैं पूजा करती हूँ। मैं और मेरा परिवार अनुष्ठान और पूजा करते हैं जो हमें हमारी मान्यताओं से जोड़े रखते हैं। हम सामूहिक धार्मिक कार्यक्रमों और समारोहों जैसे गणेश पूजा और दिवाली में जाते हैं। ये सब हमें सही और नैतिक बातों पर विश्वास करके एक बेहतर इन्सान बनने में मदद करते हैं।

Indian Culture and I

What I eat, what I wear, the music I listen to, the language I speak, the religious programs I participate in – all these things have a deep connection with my Indian culture.

Indian food is world famous for its spicy and distinctive taste! Indian culture has a lot of variety in food. Spicy food is my favorite food. I like to help my mother in making Indian food like roti, curry, dal, rice, and vegetables.

The Indian clothes I wear have intricate and colorful designs with embroidery, zari, and mirrors. They always look beautiful and attractive for every occasion! I wear Indian clothes to Indian events and it helps me to stay connected to my culture.

Music has a different identity in Indian culture. It is melodious and emotional and it provides unity to the Indian society. Most of the Indian music I listen to is sung in Hindi. Also, India is known for unique musical instruments like Sitar, Veena, Harmonium, Tabla and Dhol etc.

Religious activities have a special place in Indian culture. It keeps me connected to the deities I worship. My family and I practice rituals and worship that keep us connected to our beliefs. We go to mass religious events and celebrations like Ganesh Puja and Diwali. All these help us to become a better person by believing what is right and moral.

Family and mother tongue have an important place in Indian culture. At home, my family and I speak to each other in Marathi. The prayers we say are in Marathi. Marathi is also spoken at our home in India. Our Marathi culture is full of songs and literature.

Ultimately, Indian culture is an ancient and great culture and I am proud to be associated with it.

ISW School news June 2023

Last month, ISW School teamed up with We Care Charity and collected sarees and Indian clothes. We collected more than 40 bags of clothes and sorted them at Tejal Doshi home. It all went to We Care Charity's location in New Hampshire, where they made boxes to sorted and package 4250 pounds of saris and clothes to India. This is the largest amount they have shipped in one time. We Care Charity thanked all those who donated their beautiful clothes. Clothes are shipped to our vetted organizations in Rajkot and Dharampur in Gujarat and to Udaipur, Rajasthan. Submitted by Tejal Doshi.

This month, ISW School kids will begin the India Day festivities by singing both National Anthems. Calling all school kids to sign up for practice at India Center, on Fridays (6-7 pm), do complete the form

Also inviting school kids for ISW School Art and Writing Talent project for the India Day brochure contest. Submit your artwork by July 15. Only 1 artwork will be chosen and published on the front cover of India Day brochure. We are also looking for our school students to write about any/or both topics- 60 Years of ISW/ 30 years of ISW School (History/achievements/vision). The write up cannot be more than 1/2 page. 2023 ISW Annual Day finale and rousing celebration of 30 years of ISW School

On Sunday May 21st, ISW Cultural and Language School celebrated its Annual Day which marks the end of the academic year for the school. This year it was an extra special celebration as the school completed 30 years since its inception. On a bright and sunny morning, this fabulous event was graced by the presence of over 270 attendees including students, parents and teachers. The event started with reciting the Indian and American National Anthems. It was followed by amazing and extraordinary performances by each of the language classes (Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, and Kannada). After each performance, the students were handed out the certificates, attendance awards and they posed for the group pictures. Dances, skits, speeches, songs, the performances included so much talent, it was a real treat to see the kids grow with each other and become so fluent in these languages. The program also marked honoring the ISW volunteers with the PVSA (Presidential Volunteer Service Awards). ISW President Puneet Kohli felicitated Mrs. Carolyn Passey, co-founder of the school and Mrs. Shiamin Melville, co-director of the school for their dedication and commitment to the school. Last but not the least, the celebration ended with a very youthful, musical and lively performance by the teachers. They danced to the medley of songs in four different languages from the 1980's era and ended the program by singing the "... ज़िन्दगी मिल के बिताएँगे '' It was loved by everyone and the air was filled with exuberance and enthusiasm. The program ended with a scrumptious lunch feast. All the families had pitched in to bring potluck items.

Behind the Scenes:

Committed to making this event memorable and special, ISW faculty and administrators worked relentlessly until the day of the event. With support and encouragement from our co- directors Shiamin Melville and Ruchi Chauhan, the event was meticulously planned so that it showcases not only the students' linguistic abilities but also gives a glimpse of the rich Indian culture. The event truly depicted the "Unity in Diversity" theme of our school.

The decoration team led by Bindiya Jain worked on creating beautiful bulletin boards and a unique centerpiece to decorate the hallways of the main lobby. While one of the boards had pictures from assemblies held throughout the school year, the other one had messages from students written on hearts that created the number "30". The hall was decked with marigold garlands and windows had mirror-work umbrellas to add more colors to the decor!

Teachers' dance performance was choreographed by Anupama Debroy and the medley had songs in four major languages (Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, and Gujarati) taught at our school.

The idea for the grand finale of the event was conceived by Sarita Deshpande. Intended to bring everyone together and spread cheer, the song created a melodious and mesmerizing environment where the audience joined the teachers singing the final few lines of the song while clapping their hearts out! It was truly an amazing 30th anniversary celebration and as our co-founder Carolyn Passeyji mentioned, "Cheers to another 30 years!"

Today’s celebration was just perfect - from the festivities planning to the decorations, all the well prepared student presentations thanks to the teachers and the students hard work, the great food thanks to the parents, to Sarita and Anu for the most fun way of ending the day with dance, music and song, and to everyone who “dressed” me and showered me with so much love!! The whole day was filled with laughter and fun and I am so glad I could be a part of it!!!

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing many of you at India Day!!

In 2020 $900 was donated on behalf of teachers to Greater Worcester Community Foundation GWCF for the 'First Responders Fund'.

New Saraswati painting at ISW School

Update: Saraswati Puja was attended by the school kids, parents and teachers on March 12. Anju Shukla guided the kids through the puja rituals with thali's prepared by Carolyn and Beena. The new painting was tastefully displayed, and adorned with flowers. Prasad prepared by the parents was handed out with special Saraswati statue brought from India by Carolyn and Sahdev Passey every year for the school kids

Many years ago when the ISW school was established, Carolyn, Pushpaji and Ushaji started the tradition of honouring the Goddess of Education, Saraswatiji as part of the school curriculum. A large portrait of her was lovingly painted plus zari and fabric was incorporated Over the years it was restored by Dr Passey and used annually. Some time back we were gifted a beautiful large sized framed picture of Saraswatiji by the Arora family which was incorporated into the celebrations.

The tradition of Saraswati puja continued online during Covid lockdown and in 2022 we were fortunate to be back in our beautiful India Center. This year we are very fortunate to have Divya Gahlot present us with a gorgeous hand painted portrait of Saraswati Maa. It took her 68 hours over 19 days to complete the creation of the 20x30 painting starting in November 2022.

We invite all to attend Saraswati puja on March 12, 2023 and come and celebrate, plus see our forever gift.

Donations for Turkey

The donation made by ISW School to help families in Turkey and Syria impacted by the catastrophic earthquake was dropped off at the home of a Northboro Junior Woman's Club member. The community's generous donations were loaded up to four vans and a UHaul truck and delivered to the Turkish Consulate and Syria’s collection centers by NuDay.

We will be accepting donations of new hats /mittens and Walmart gift cards (any number of gift cards accepted but each gift card in values of $10 only). In preparation for Thanksgiving, the school Art teachers prepared a fun Turkey Headband and a classy Thanksgiving Card The pictures in the link speak for themselves. Bindiya, Ruchi, Divya, Mrunal, Sonia & Student teachers.

The ISW school had a Halloween assembly on October 30th. The kids dressed up in a variety of costumes from lawyer to fairy, and paraded around the school. Some teachers also joined in the fun by dressing up also. Many of the parents came to joined the fun and take pictures of their kids as well. We also played a game, on the patio, which the kids enjoyed ending with a group of winners. Treats were handed out to the kids to finish off the amazing halloween assembly. November 6, 2022 assembly had a mixture of storytelling and energetic bollyfit dance During 1st part of our assembly Our story teller Subhasini Subhashini Sivasankaran ji did an amazing job of involving kids to make it more interactive. The ISW Cultural & Language School celebrated its Annual Day which marks the close of the academic year. On a bright and sunny morning, students and their parents attended as certificates were handed out by the teachers for successful completion of coursework in the various grades and languages. And we are excited that our graduating seniors, Kunal Chauhan, Adrika Singh and Jaya Singh come back as our new student teachers. Thanks to Suchitra Agarwal, our veteran teacher who is allowed to take a break after many years as the teacher for our kindergarten newbies. Also thanks to Mukul Agarwal who prepared a video recap of all our activities during our first in person classes in our beautiful India Center.

Rules for Hindi USA Certificate exam.

1) The fees of $25 for the exam to be paid online via registration link by May 6, 2022.This fee will go to Hindi USA directly.

2) We need kids' full names in Hindi and English, so please Whatsapp their names to Ruchi

3)We don't check the test papers before mailing them back, we just proctor it.

For siblings, please register twice. Last year we had 5 students register for the exams, very proud of them.

We are happy to report that Hindi 4 students have conclud5ed their " U for Ukraine fundraiser" on a great note raising $600 in total that will go to World Central Kitchen that is feeding people in Ukraine. Winners of the 3D Printed objects were: Bhavya Kamakolanu, Saket Gahlot, Sohan Hegde and Paarth Kapoor. In addition, Srikant Muddana (Telugu Class) won the 50% off 2022 school fees raffle. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the teachers, parents and volunteers for supporting the cause. Thanks to Kunal Chauhan for printing the 3D prizes.

Free Sanskrit introductory family workshop April 16

ISW School is offering Sanskrit in September 2022 in partnership with Samskrita Bharati USA based in Boston.

We will start with a free introductory family workshop that will be held on April 16, Saturday, 9.30 to 4 pm. (6.5 hours, with a Potluck lunch break)

And the emphasis with Samskritam class is to have the whole family to start learning, so adults and kids are welcome.

You need to be an ISW Member to register for the school sessions when they begin, but this family workshop is open to all Sanskrit enthusiasts. If there is a second child, the registration has to be repeated. There is no cost for attendees.

Kannada Classes started at ISW

ISW Cultural & Language School has opened registrations for Kannada beginners classes. All are welcome

Open House was on February 5, 2022 and February 12, 2022. Actual classes began on March 5, 2022 and we offered two free classes. Do register for two free classes, using the registration link. If you like it, do return and pay for the classes.

We will be using the curriculum and workbooks offered by Kannada Academy. Kannada Academy is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools and Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Participate in yoga and culture classes on Sundays at 10.30 am, with no extra charge

We stand on the shoulders of our veteran volunteers Usha Verma, Priti Dayal, Nisha Bawa, Sushmita Bando, Ragini Seth, Alka Yadav-Mehta, Neena Mohanka and many more

We are fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers. The school has grown to 140 students , 5 languages and a staff of 40+ teachers.

ISW School assemblies are fun, remarked the students at ISW School

ISW school offers a variety of activities including crafts, religion, story time If you have an idea or want to share your travels in India or knowledge of Indian culture, please contact Ruchi.

For today’s assembly we had story time with our parent volunteer -Subhashini. She read the story from Panchtantra 'Musical Donkey' and 'Sky is falling' With our new AV equipment with the illustrations were projected on the large screen TV . Kids were very engaged and learned about the moral lesson behind the stories.

For the second part of the assembly kids participated in a winter craft lead by Our teacher Bindiya Jain and supported by our teachers ,student teachers and parent volunteers. Younger kids had a chance to decorate wooden ornaments and decorate snowman and older kids made colorful festive pop up Cards.

Kids enjoyed both activities.

Last week , the ISW School had a fun assembly on our new outside Patio, built by funds donated by Vithal & Bharti Bhakta.

It was conducted by the Gujarati teachers. Anjali Amin, the new student teacher taught the children on how and why Navratri is celebrated in different part of India. Presentation Summary:

In the east, Durga puja is celebrated over the last 5 days of Navratri. Durgashtami is the day that Goddess Durga slayed the demon. On this day life sized clay idols of goddess Durga and the demon are immersed in water after being worshipped for 5 days in a temple.

In North India, Navratri is celebrated as the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravan. Durgashtami is the day that Goddess Durga slayed the demon. On this day life sized clay idols of goddess Durga and the demon are immersed in water after being worshipped for 5 days in a temple.

In South India, during Navratri, friends, relatives, and neighbors are invited to look at the Kolu, which is a display of different idols and figurines of Goddess Durga.

July Storywalk® at Lake Street Park, Shrewsbury.

Throughout the month of July - Walk through the park and read the Hindi book: Malli written by Jeeva Raghunath. Listen to Ruchi Chauhan as she narrates the story in Hindi & English. This bilingual Storywalk® was created in partnership with Shrewsbury Public Library, Park & Rec Staff and ISW's Cultural and Language School. Priya Rathnam, Director, Shrewsbury Public Library had approached Arathi Cowlagi, also on the Friends of SPL, to add multilingual version this summer. With Ashish's help, we added QR Codes, so the children can enjoy the story in Hindi and in English. The pages were printed and laminated and the Parks and Rec staff installed the stakes and affixed the pages. The Friends of the Library funded the books and the lamination costs.

We hope to add more Indian languages to create awareness of the different languages offered by the ISW School. There are other StoryWalk projects installations in 10 neighborhood parks across Boston.

On May 22, we held the ISW School's Annual Day program at INDIA CENTER.

The event was held on the patio and their attendance certificates were presented by the teachers. The attendees wore masks and followed social distancing. Almost 95 students came with their parents in three shifts, per their classes, as listed below .

1.00 to 1.45 pm Tamil, Telugu, Hindi K1 Beg, Hindi 4

2.00 to 2.45 pm Gujarati, Hindi K2, Hindi 2 Beg and Adv, Hindi 3, Hindi Adult, Hindi ++ Beg

3.00 to3.45 pm Marathi, Hindi K1 Adv, ,Hindi 1, Hindi ++Adv

Many donated toiletry items to support Nalini Goyal, one of the founders of the school for ‘Gifts of Hope’. In all we also collected $130 in donations also for it.

We presented graduation certificates to our 5 Hindi School graduates, Tanvi Gahlot, Leisha Gupta, Prachet Mahawar, Priyanshu Sahu, and Diya Sadhu. They had prepared appreciation speeches for Sonia entirely in Hindi.

We also want to give a big shout to Carolyn Passey for preparing the certificate of attendance for each and every one of our 140 students. "Thank you Carolyn", and the calligraphy tags made by Suchitra and cupcakes by Priya Vaidya

As the year draws to a close , we specially want to thank our 4 student teachers, Mansi Gera (taught Hindi for 2 years) Krishnaa Amin (taught Gujarati for 5 years) Menaja Raja (taught Tamil for 5 years) and Aanya Sachdeva (taught Hindi for 2 years) . All the best to Mansi, Krishnaa, and Menaja who are off to college.

HI Parents, it is that time of year again, the academic year draws to an end. Many of you wanted to show your appreciation for the great volunteer work done by the ISW Language Teachers, Assembly Teachers and Staff. Our school has been going strong for 28 years with the support of our teachers, so thank you to them.
Last year $900 was donated on behalf of teachers to Greater Worcester Community Foundation GWCF for the 'FIrst Responders Fund'. This year as agreed by the teachers the donation collected for 2021 will go towards the ISW building expansion fund. Once again thanks to all the teachers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

We are very proud to announce that Mansi Gera, ISW School Hindi Student Teacher for two years and a graduate of ISW Cultural and Language school, achieved the Seal of Biliteracy for Hindi at Westboro High School this month.

Congrats to Mansi for going one step beyond, we are very proud of you.

The state of Massachusetts and the Department of Education describes the award as “A recognition of students who have achieved proficiency in English as well as one or more additional languages. It is a statement of accomplishment that helps to signal evidence of a student’s readiness for career and college, and to engage as a global citizen.” The State Seal of Biliteracy is an award that recognizes high school students who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.

Sarita Deshpande, ISW Music Teacher welcomed the students. It began with a rendition of 'Hey Ram' sung by Aadhya Raghavendra, Tanisha and Kian Rao, Tanvian Saket Gahlot, Surabhi Dindore, Aayushi Das Gupta, Sohan Hegde, Ashita Agarwal & Ria Seth. It was followed by 'Sharde Sharde', sung by Dhruv and Arush Jagan, Tanvi and Saket Gahlot, Surabhi Dindore & Sohan Hegde. Anju Shukla explained the rituals of Saraswati Puja and in conclusion Soumya Warty, sang 'Ya Kundendu'

ISW School celebrates Republic Day 2021

During the Republic Day assembly, Prachet and Adrika gave a short presentation on Republic Day, and the meaning of the colors used for the Tri Color. Ria Seth followed it instructions of how to make the Indian National Flag using slime.

It was followed by a very informative session by Hindi 4 students about "Pioneers of Modern India" in which they talked about the great Indian scientists and researchers. Prachet Mahawar initiated the idea of making it more interactive by creating the presentation using infographics. Both he and Tanvi Gahlot led the rest of the class in working on the presentation using Canva. All the students collaborated on researching on one pioneer each. They met deadlines, edited the slides together, and took feedback positively. It was a great learning experience for all of them but what stood out from all of this was the camaraderie they all showed and the result was outstanding!

ISW Tutoring Match Program getting ready for 4^th round of matching

ISW Cultural and Language School launched the new online Students & Tutor match program in August 2020, to help parents with arranging one on one online tutoring for the kids with help from IYG members. The topics are Math, Physics, Science, English, Spanish Language and Life skills like Time Management. The tutors accumulate volunteer hours and our hassled parents get the support they need from ISW.

In the last month we have matched 32 tutors with pupils and have received incredibly positive feedback. Our tutors have given us 160 hour of volunteer hours.

As we write our thoughts on how valuable and timely the student volunteers and the tutoring program has been, we are reminded of the quote from Ruth Ginsburg. When we enrolled our twin daughters Aadhya & Naavya who are in 1^st grade for the language class, it was our first-time being part of the ISW community. We happened to see the tutoring by the high school students and decided to give it a try especially since our kids were planning to do remote schooling. Having 1-on-1 interaction with a teacher is so limited in the online program, we thought that the tutoring would augment this more since the tutors come with their experience of being in the school system here and help us navigate the curriculum more easily.

It is commendable how ISW came up with this program and encouraged high school students to participate and share their time with the community. We are truly amazed by the knowledge, effort and dedication of the assigned tutors, Lara Mukundan and Aditya Jhalavat. Each week, both Lara and Aditya would come prepared with lesson plans and help Aadhya and Naavya learn new concepts. They even challenge them to come out of their comfort zone and try concepts that are not yet taught in the school. We are so Thankful for the time they spend each week with the kids. It is not easy to keep 6 year olds engaged in a virtual session after a long day of school but our kids look forward to the classes. Lara and Aditya come up with creative ways using games and interactive ideas all the time and quickly change it to ensure they constantly keep the kids interested. We are so appreciative of you and ISW to have provided us with this opportunity. Also, grateful to Lara and Aditya for having contributed towards the growth and learning of both Aadhya and Naavya. Kudos to their parents to have supported them as well.

Ria: This is for Rihddi, my Spanish teacher. She is truly the best. I love sitting in meetings with her and she was really helpful with teaching me Spanish. I'm very grateful I had her as my Spanish teacher. Sometimes even if we were playing hangman in Spanish she made it awesome if anybody else was teaching i will still be learning how to say 1 in Spanish.

Arush: "My tutoring teacher is awesome. When class starts, we always do something fun like Kahoots. Most of the time we do fun Kahoots like grammar and other topics related to Language arts. My tutoring teacher decides what topic I should do if I am doing an essay and when I am done or when I am still working on it, she edits my writing to make it more flexible, smooth, and making sense. Every class I tell my tutoring teacher what in Language arts I am struggling with, say I am struggling with grammar, with all of the time we have, I feel I am strong with grammar."

Dhruv: "I really like the way she teaches me. Before we start the class, she always asks what I would like to learn for the day, meaning she is very flexible with what she is teaching and I am glad that I am learning so much from her. I am definitely improving in my subjects! She not only teaches me with explaining, she gives me examples in real life of what we are learning, making it easier for me to understand the topic".

This program has been great during this strange school year. For my kids I had requested assistance with math. Both Maya and Arvind have been really good with communicating their availability, planning the sessions and conducting the sessions. Thank you for making this happen!

I thought the tutor program is a great idea. The content varies from class to class instead of having some continuity. Yash seems to be enjoying the classes

ISW School Diwali Make delicious Chocolate Barfi

Chocolate Barfi

This is a simplified, kid friendly, microwave version of barfi.

Ingredients :

2 cups whole milk powder (available at any grocery store in the aisle with the Hershey syrup/hot cocoa)

1 can condensed milk 14 oz

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

1/2 tsp fine Elachi/cardamom powder

1 tsp rose water

1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips (8-10 oz bag)

2 tbsp heavy whipping cream

Silver leaf/nuts/rose petals for the top

Supply list :

One big 6 cup, one small 2 cup and one 1 cup - all microwave safe bowls. 2 spatulas, measuring cups and spoons, parchment paper, a square or rectangle dish to set the Mithai in. A microwave and heat safe gloves or pot holders.

Steps for white barfi layer :

1. Prepare a tray. I used a square 8x8 pan. Line it with a parchment paper. Grease the paper so it is easy to remove the Mithai form it. Make sure there is a little overhang of the paper, it makes it easier to lift out the Mithai.

2. In a large microwave safe bowl, place butter and microwave until melted (about a minute).

3. Add condensed milk and milk powder and whisk well. Microwave on high for one minute and then mix very well again.

4. Back in the microwave for 1 more minute, remove and mix it well again.

5. Microwave for 30 seconds this time, remove & mix, back in for 30 more seconds. Remove & mix

6. Add the Elachi powder and rose water. Mix well and put it in the prepared tray and spread evenly. Put this in the refrigerator for 1 hr.

Steps for chocolate layer :

1. Take the chocolate chips in microwave safe bowl and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Remove & stir.

2. Microwave for 30 seconds and mix well again.

3. Back in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, depending on microwave power. Remove and stir. At this point the chocolate chips should have completely melted.

4. In another bowl take the heavy cream and heat it for 10 seconds in the microwave.

5. Mix this well with the melted chocolate. If the chocolate starts to seize, put it back in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.

6. Spread this evenly on the barfi layer.

7. Decorate with your choice of nuts/chocolate chips/rose petals/silver leaf.

8. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

9. Remove for refrigerate, lift it out and cut into desired shape shape with a knife. Enjoy !

Microwave steps :

Butter - 1 min

Milk powder & condensed milk, mix - 1 min

Mix - 1 mix

Mix - 30 seconds

Separate bowl, Chocolate chips - 30 seconds

Mix - 30 seconds

Mix - 20-30 seconds

Separate bowl, cream - 10 seconds

Combine the 2 , mix - 15 seconds

Tips - refrigerating the layers makes spreading the next one easier to spread.

Have fun with the toppings - get creative.

Use a hot knife to get clean cuts on the barfi - I run my knife in very hot water, wipe it dry and cut, do this for every other cut.

ISW Tutoring program Summary

ISW School launched a new online Students & Tutor match program to help parents with arranging one on one online tutoring for the kids with help from IYG. The topics can be Math, Physics, Science, English, Languages and Life skills like Time Management. The hours would be volunteer hours, based on student tutor availability. For the initial pilot program, it would be open to ISW members only and IYG members, so we can monitor this program for online safety.

1. Program will run from September to the end of June 2021, however commitment is expected from our volunteers until the end of January 2021, for now.

2. Student tutors will be in grade 9 or up

3. One on one tutoring was recommended since some kids would be hesitant to ask questions in a larger setting

4. One-hour training/orientation for safe online etiquette to be held for student tutors

5. Before classes start, an initial meeting to held possibly 4-way between (a) Parents of student and (b) student tutors and (c) assigned Student tutors (d) ISW school rep

6. Personal WebEx/Zoom to be set up by parents or student tutors, will not be set up by ISW.

7. Volunteer hours to be signed by IYG advisor: Shubh Agrawal

8. CORI check for student tutors between 14-18 years is a TBD.

9. Attendance spreadsheet on google doc to be set up and filled out by student tutors

New ISW Tutoring program

ISW Cultural and Language School is launching a new online Students & Tutor match program to help IYG members get volunteer hours and help parents by providing one on one online tutoring for their kids with help from IYG members. Tutored topics will include Math, Science, English, History, School taught Foreign Languages, and Life skills like Time Management. Student tutors will get volunteer hour credit for sessions conducted, and sessions will be based on student-teacher availability. To monitor online safety, the initial pilot program will only be open to ISW members and IYG members.

For now we expect a commitment to the end of January , minimum one hour per week. There will be an initial online meeting for tutors, and a CORI check later. Sessions begin September 14, 2020.

कुठेतरी आता अकस्मात एक अदृश्य दर्शन दे

देवा आता साजरा करायला एक सोहळा तरी दे

आणि असे म्हणत, पाहता पाहता भाद्रपद महिना येऊन ठेपला आणि सर्व संकटांवर मात करत आमचे बाप्पा खरंच दर्शन द्यायला हजर झाले. पुन्हा उत्सवाचे वातावरण पसरले आणि कार्यक्रमाची तयारी सुरु झाली. श्रुसबरी ह्या बॉस्टन जवळील शहरात, गणेशोत्सव साजरे करण्याचे आमचे हे ९ वे वर्ष.

यंदाच्या वर्षीचा चा गणेशोत्सव मात्र जरासा वेगळा. करोना महामारी मुळे जगभर सार्वजनिक सण साजरे करायला जे निर्बंध दिले गेले आहेत त्या नुसार आम्ही सुद्धा ह्या वर्षीचा सोहळा "virtual" म्हणजे आपापल्या घरातून करायचे ठरवले. नेहमीप्रमाणे लगबग आणि नियोजन काही महिने आधी पासून सुरु झाले. डिजिटल entertainment ची नव-नवीन साधनं आत्मसात करून आम्ही कार्यक्रम करायला सज्ज झालो.

ऑगस्ट ३० ला दुपारी २ वाजता, सर्व यंत्रणा "live" झाली, म्हणजे facebook live ह्या माध्यमातून व्हीडीओ द्वारे पूर्ण सोहळा रसिकांना पाहता आला. श्री. यतीन व सौ. स्मिता मांजरेकर ह्यांच्या घरी रीतसर पूजा झाली. छान सजावट, फुलांची आरास आणि तेजस्वी बाप्पाची मूर्ती पाहून सगळेच सुखावले. स्मिताच्या आई वडिलांनी पूजा सांगितली व सर्व रसिकांना आणि भक्तांना घरी बसून पाहता आली आणि बाप्पा चे दर्शन घेता आले. "दुधाची तहान ताकावर" असा प्रकार जरी असला तरी, हे हि नसे थोडके म्हणत आम्ही ह्यातही आनंद घेतला. पूजे नंतर सामूहिक आरती सुद्धा छान पार पडली. अनेक देवांच्या आरत्या म्हणाल्या गेल्या आणि अनेक कुटुंब आपापल्या घरातून त्यात एका पाठोपाठ सामील झाली. मर्यादा पाळत त्यातल्यात्यात जास्ती जास्त लोकांना सहभागी करून घेत आरती छान झाली.

नंतर लगेचच करमणुकीचा कार्यक्रम सुरु झाला. पूर्णपणे आभासी (virtual ) कार्यक्रम करणे, रचणे आणि पाहणे हा आमच्या साठी आणि श्रोत्यांसाठी सुद्धा नवीनच अनुभव होता. सर्व पूर्व-ध्वनी मुद्रित करून ठेवलेल्या चित्रफिती तयार होत्या. कार्यक्रमाचे सूत्र संचालन मात्र "live" होते. अश्या स्वरूपाचा कार्यक्रम असल्याने ह्या वर्षीचे नावीन्य म्हणजे महाराष्ट्रातून अनेक प्रसिद्ध लोकांना आम्हाला सामील करून घेता आले. कार्यक्रम "retro to metro" ह्या theme वर आधारित होता. मराठी आणि हिंदी मधील प्रसिद्ध सिनेमांवर आधारित नाटुकली तयार करण्यात आली. आपल्या जवळच्या मित्र मैत्रिणींना पडद्यावर पाहून सर्वांना छान वाटलं. मराठी चित्रपटांमध्ये, सचिन पिळगावकर यांचे "अष्टविनायक", "आत्मविश्वास", आणि "अशी हि बनवा-बनावी" ह्यांचा समावेश होता. तर हिंदी मधे "शोले", "मैने प्यार किया" आणि "थ्री इडियटस" ह्या तीन चित्रपटांवर आधारित गाणी आणि नाटुकली करण्यात आली. आपापल्या घरी सर्वानी उत्साहानी आणि भरपूर मेहेनत घेऊन चित्रफिती तयार केल्या होत्या. कार्यक्रमाचे, वर नमूद केल्या प्रमाणे, मुख्य वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे महाराष्ट्रातून, सुप्रसिद्ध संगीत दिग्दर्शक, सिनेमा दिग्दर्शक, गायक, श्री. डॉ. सलील कुलकर्णी ह्यांनी सर्वांना शुभेच्छा दिल्या, त्याच बरोबर श्री. अशोक हांडे (मराठी बाणा ) ह्यांची सुद्धा गणपतीची गाणे गाऊन त्यांच्या शुभेच्छा आमच्या ISW गणेशोत्सव मंडळाला पाठवल्या. श्री. सुधीर गाडगीळ ह्यांची त्यांच्या अनोख्या शैलीत पु ल देशपांड्यांची आठवण सांगत, कार्यक्रमाची रंगात वाढवली. नंतर प्रसिद्ध सिनेमा लेखक, दिग्दर्शक, "मी शिवाजीराजे भोसले बोलतोय", "शूट आऊट आट वडाळा ", "वजीर", "आणि डॉ. काशिनाथ घाणेकर" ह्या सारखे दर्जेदार चित्रपट करणारे श्री. अभिजित देशपांडे, ह्यांच्याशी साधलेला संवाद प्रदर्शित झाला. अभिजित देशपांडेंनी या गप्पांमधून त्यांचे अनुभव, आठवणी, अभिताभ बच्चन सारख्या मोठ्या लोकां बरोबरचे अनुभव संगितले . मुलाखत खूप रंगली. त्यांनतर मुलींनी केलेला एक बहारदार नृत्याचा कार्यक्रम रसिकांना खूप आवडला.

तब्बल २ तासांचा असा online/virtual कार्यक्रम कोणत्याही तांत्रिक अडचणी न येता अगदी प्रभावी पणे पार पडला. डिजिटल एंटरटेनमेंट चे हे आगळे वेगळे माध्यम आता अंगवळणी पडतेय असे वाटते. Virtual कार्यक्रम प्रभावी आणि रसिकांना खुश करणारा झाला यात वादच नाही. माणूस खूप परिवर्तनशील असतो, आणि तो परिस्थिती प्रमाणे बदल आत्मसात करतो. त्यामुळे यंदाच्या ह्या covid च्या परिस्थिती मध्ये साजरा केलेला हा उत्सव आपल्या सर्वांच्याच लक्षात राहील.

मनात हे बदलेले जग कायम घर करून राहणार... पुढल्या वर्षी मात्र हे जगभरातले सर्व चिंतेचे सावट दूर झालेले असेल, आणि आम्ही पुन्हा पूर्वी सारखे, नटून थटून, भरपूर ढोल-ताशांचा आवाज करत बाप्पांचे स्वागत करू आणि पंगती सकट, मोदक, श्रीखंडाचा भरपूर आस्वाद घेऊ अशी सगळे आशा करूया ..

संस्कृती आणि परंपरा ही, काळ, परिस्थिती, माणसं, …माणसांची हौस ह्यांच्या पलीकडे असते. काळ, बदलतो, परिस्थिती बदलते, माणसं बदलतात, पण भावना, परंपरा, आणि सोहळे हे कुठल्या ना कुठल्या स्वरूपात सुरूच राहतात, आणि सुरूच राहणार.....

We are happy to announce that Registration is open for ISW Cultural & Language School Sept 2020-May 2021

The ISW Cultural and Language School was established in 1992. We believe that ‘a language binds a culture’ and we have a home base at our India Center Center in Shrewsbury, for our children who are the future of the Indian Community. Language and Culture are intertwined and we provide a safe place to learn, ask questions and participate in arts, music, activities and yoga.

The school will meet online for now every Saturday & Sunday morning from September to May. We currently have 17 classes in 5 different languages (Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati,Tamil, Telugu) for all age groups, including beginning Hindi for teenagers and adults for Hindi .

ISW Cultural and Language School would like to thank the volunteer teachers for adapting to the online instruction since March 2020, and to the parents for helping us continue our mission of teaching languages. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of us, especially in our day to day lives, both emotionally and financially. Keeping in mind all these considerations we would to share our plans for the upcoming academic year

Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil and Marathi held on Sunday School Fees:

We are offering a split semester payment option this year given the uncertainty of 2021. Keeping in mind that the current fees are nominal due to support from the community for providing the India Center, we can also offer a 10% discount for the first online semester of 18 sessions. Example: 10% off half the regular $220 fee, so it will be 10% x $110 = $100. For the second semester, we will incur additional expenses to ensure clean and sanitized premises when we have in person classes/events and the new building is ready. The fees will be $110, payable in January 2021 if we have in person, or $100 if all classes school stays online .

We will offer online yoga, thanks to Alka and culture classes on alternate Sundays, the new schedule to be published soon.

Telugu held on Saturday School Fees: There is no change in the fees, and they will continue online for both semesters, plus participate on online yoga and culture classes on Sundays

By the end of December 2020, we will review the issue again and do a survey, keeping in mind the safety of the volunteer teachers & kids.

We have completed one week of classes , and are happy to announce that we have more than 120 kids signed up for 9 different sessions. Fortunate to have so many volunteer student teachers, and the subjects range from Math, Hindi, Python, Games, Origami, and Indian Cooking.

ISW Masti Online Summer starts July 6 Get a headstart for next academic year

We are excited to announce the ISW Masti Online Summer series starting July 6. It will run on weekday afternoons, and there will be classes for different ages ranging from 6- 14 years. These classes are offered free of charge and kids can register for multiple classes. All we ask that their attendance be consistent.

We will need a minimum number of students enrolled to start a class.

Here is a tentative schedule for 6 sessions starting July 6th until August 15.The schedule and classes time are tentative only and may change.

Hi Parents, In today's changing time when we are trying to connect more virtually online, we may sometimes feel that we need to learn more about safe online practice.

ISW member Sarita Deshpande, Math Teacher at AMSA and language teacher ISW Marathi Shala is offering a webinar session on digital citizenship and how to avoid Scams and Phishing for kids especially for middle school and parents of all ages.

Its open to everyone at 4:00 PM-4:50 PM on July 8th. Wednesday

मराठी शाळेचा (virtual) गुढीपाडवा कार्यक्रम (एप्रिल १९, २०२०)

दरवर्षी प्रमाणे या वर्षी ही आपल्या ISW मराठी शाळेने गुढी-पाडव्याच्या कार्यक्रमाची तयारी महिनाभर आधी पासून चालू केली होती. सर्व मुले, त्यांना सादर करायच्या कविता , गाणी , उतारा वाचन यांची जय्यत तयारी करत होती. पण फक्त थोडासा फरक हा होता , की दर वर्षी आम्ही आमच्या शाळेच्या ठिकाणी मोठ्या हॉल मध्ये जमून, पॉट लक करून सर्वजण ( शाळेची मुले, पालक , शिक्षक आणि परिवार ) एकत्र जेवण करतो, तसे न करता, या करोना च्या वातावरणात हा सण आम्ही virtually साजरा केला.

शाळेच्याच वेळेत सर्व मुले आणि त्यांचे पालक नटून सजून कॉम्पुटर समोर बसून या समारंभात सहभागी झाले.

आमच्या सगळ्या मुलांनी ‘ गणपती तुझे नाव चांगले’ ही गणपतीची प्रार्थना म्हणून कार्यक्रमाला सुरुवात केली.सगळ्या उपस्थित असलेल्यांना गुढी पाडव्याच्या शुभेच्छा दिल्या, आपल्या जवळ खास यानिमित्ताने ठेवलेल्या छोट्याश्या गुढीला वंदन केले.

शारव ने गुढी- पाडव्याचे महत्व यावरील एक उतारा वाचून हा सण का व कसा साजरा केला जातो, त्याचे आपल्या मराठी वर्षाच्या कॅलेंडर प्रमाणे असलेले महत्व, त्या दिवशी घरोघरी कशी गुढी उभारली जाते, हा दिवस हिंदू वर्षातील पहिला दिवस आहे, पुराणात सांगितलेल्या साडेतीन मुहूर्तांपैकी एक मुहूर्त म्हणजे हा दिवस आहे, अशी बरीच माहिती दिली.आरुष, स्वानंद , प्रांजली यांनी मिळून अवयवांचे गाणे अत्यंत छान पद्धतीने सादर केले, सादर करताना त्यांच्या एकत्रित काम करण्याच्या पद्धतीचे सर्व पालकांकडून भरपूर कौतुक झाले. त्यानंतर आमच्या लहान वर्गातील अवनी , सान्वी, विवान , अनिशा , श्रेया या मुलांनी ‘ तूच माझी आई का?’ नावाचे एक छोटुकले नाटक सादर केले.सगळ्यांनीच खूप छान मेहनत घेऊन, सगळे अंक, बाराखडी , वार , तिथी याचे पाठांतर करून ते या नाटुकल्या अंतर्गत सादर केले.सगळ्या मावश्या, काका, यांनी या छोट्या शिलेदारांचे मनापासून कौतुक केले.

आपल्या bmm पाठ्यपुस्तकातील सगळ्याच मुलांचे लाडके असलेले ‘ घड्याळाचे गाणे ‘ साकेत ने अगदी खणखणीत आवाजात तोंडपाठ म्हणून सगळ्यांचीच शाबासकी घेतली तर त्याचीच मोठी बहीण तृष्णा हिने ‘ एक छानशी ‘ बबलगम’ नावाची कविता अस्खलित आणि स्पष्ट पणे सादर केली. आर्यन ने ‘शुभंकरोती कल्याणम आणि भीमरूपी महारुद्रा ‘ हे दोन श्लोक - जे त्याचे बाबा त्याच्याकडून रोज म्हणवून घेतात, मनापासून म्हणले. शमिका ने या सध्याच्या करोना lockdown मध्ये घरी राहून ती काय वेगवेगळ्या गोष्टी करत ती हा घरात बसून राह्यचा वेळ कसा सत्कारणी लावते, तसेच या परिस्थिती बद्दल तिचे काही विचार हे सगळे लिहून त्याचे वाचन सादर केले.

तर ध्रुव आणि स्वरा या आमच्या विद्यार्थ्यांनी त्यांना नेमून दिलेले ‘ कपिला आणि जेनी ‘ आणि ‘पाहुणे’ हे उतारे स्वच्छ, शुद्ध आणि स्पष्ट उच्चरात वाचून सादर केले.

एकूण कार्यक्रम जरी ऑनलाईन साजरा होत होता तरीही प्रत्येक मुलाची उपस्थिती आणि सहभाग हा वाखाणण्याजोगा होता. कार्यक्रमाला आमच्या शाळेच्या इतर काही शिक्षिका आणि आमच्या डायरेक्टर मॅडम ही उपस्थित होत्या. प्रत्यक्ष रित्या जरी भेटता आले नाही, तरीही या अशा आगळ्या वेगळ्या स्वरूपात गुढी पाडव्यानिमित्त भेटून मुले आणि पालक मंडळी एकदम खुश झाली यात मात्र शंका नाही.

ISW Marathi Shala Gudhi Padva Event

This year, as every year, our ISW Marathi school had started preparations for the Gudi-Padva program a month in advance. All the children were preparing for the poems, songs and transcripts to be presented. The only difference was that every year we gather in a big hall at our school premises, with potluck, (school children, parents, teachers and family) lunch together, without doing so, we virtually celebrated this festival in this Corona environment.

We celebrated this event during our regular school hours on Sunday. All the children and their parents sat in front of the computer and participated in the ceremony.

Our children started the program by praying Ganapati, 'Ganapati, Tuze Nav Changale’

The reading on ‘Why and how this festival is celebrated, importance of Gudhi-Padva, how Gudi is erected at home on that day, this is the first day of Hindu Calendar, one of the auspicious days of the year, etc’ was presented by Sharav.

Arush, Swanand, Pranjali performed songs on ‘body parts’ together in a very nice way, while their method of working together was appreciated by all the parents. After that, Avni, Sanvi, Vivan, Anisha, Shreya from our Junior Class, performed a short play called 'Tuch Mazi Aai Ka?’

Everyone worked very hard, recited all the numbers, alphabets, verses, dates and performed it under this play. All the aunts and uncles appreciated this little wonder.

Saket recited a poem which is favorite of all the students. The poem was’ Ghadyalache Gaane’. Triashna performed a beautiful poem called 'Bubblegum' which applauded everyone as she recited it in a loud and clear voice

Aryan recited the two verses ‘Shubhankaroti Kalyanam and Bhimrupi Maharudra’ - which his father recites with him as an everyday ritual.

. Shamika shared her readings on how she makes the most of her time at home in the current Corona lockdown, as well as some of her thoughts on the situation.

Our students Dhruv and Swara read the excerpts 'Kapila and Jenny' and 'Pahune' assigned to them in clear, pure voice and in an efficient manner.

The overall event was celebrated online, the attendance and participation of each child was commendable ,the event was also attended by some other teachers of our school and our director madam. Although we could not meet in person, there is no doubt that the children and parents were very happy to meet in such a unique way on the occasion of Gudi Padva.

Hindi 4 Students compile a Magazine

The Hindi 4 students of ISW Culture and Language School created a magazine in Hindi as part of their year-end project. Students worked on different articles that included a poem, sport's article, cartoon, crossword puzzle, a story and multiple translated recipes. They typed their articles in Hindi using Google Hindi transliteration. We hope the eSandesh readers will enjoy this magazine and appreciate the hard work put in by these budding Hindi writers!

ISW Cultural and Language School Annual Day 2020

On May 24, we had our first online ISW Annual Day program. It lasted more than three hours with each class joining in for an assigned 15 minute time slot. It was very successful, and we were happy that we could recognize the kids and their hard work. Carolyn mailed individual certificates to over 100 student’s homes. They were presented to the student by their parents at the end of each session. It added the perfect touch. We were fortunate to have grandparents and relatives join in from India and across the US. Congratulations to Abhiram and Aaryan for graduating Hindi 4 and for their acknowledgement speeches. We really are excited that we were able to complete our academic year virtually and with style. Kudos to all the teachers, parents and parents who supported our Webex calls and, of course, the students who made it possible. You can see some of the graduation Webex photos below.

Namaste. Here are the details for ISW Annual Day Sunday May 24, 2020. We need your support for this program, since we are all new to online meeting format, (fingers crossed).

(a)School certificates have been prepared by Carolyn Passey and mailed Monday May 18 to your homes PLEASE PLEASE hide it from your kids, and present it only to them when their name is called

(b) Please use laptop or ipad to login and not the phone, download webex before meeting

(e)Please only login during your 15 mins time slot not for the whole 90 mins. Each class will have approx 15 mins with their teachers, it may move faster or may be delayed, so do be there on time.We have scheduled meeting for 4 hours, but you have to be there only for your timings. Teachers are welcome for all slots. I was hoping we could have everyone attend, however my webex account does not let me 'pin' only 14-15 kids at a time If you are not attending, its ok, we will just wait and move to the next time slot, no stress

ISW Masti Mazaa first pilot session

ISW's first pilot session of online fun activities for kids " ISW Masti Mazaa" initiated by Mansi, our student teacher, was a success. The free activities range from karaoke, origami, yoga, dance, art, games, writing etc. There is no restriction to the number of sessions your child can join. For example, they can join Fridays and Tuesdays. All we ask that their attendance be consistent. We will need a minimum number of students enrolled to start a class.

It is open to the community. Bring a friend!!ISW Masti Mazaa classes will be open to kids ages ranging 8-11 (except writing class) and here is a tentative schedule for 6 sessions starting May 19th, until end of June 2020.

1. Safalta Shukla: Tuesdays 4pm
2. Tanvi Gahlot: Wednesdays 4 pm
3. Leisha Gupta: Thursday 4 pm
4. Mansi Gera: Fridays 4 pm
5. Dhriti Pitre: Saturdays 4 pm (Only for writing)( Age 9-12)
6. Tanvi M. and Sakshi: Sunday 4 pm (Only Dance)

Hope you are all doing good. This weekend is the last day of our Language classes Cannot believe 9 months have gone by, and school is over. But wait, we are not done!

ISW ONLINE CLASSES

Starting next week, we are beginning free ISW Masti classes offered by our awesome ISW student teachers. Today is the last day to enroll for 6 sessions starting May 19th, until end of June 2020. We have approx 8-10 kids signed up for every class and welcome more participation. For more information, click below

Hope you are all doing well, Happy Mother's Day to all

School News: We are coming to the end of the academic year, and thank you to the teachers and parents who have supported the new online format. Most of the classes have the end of year exams this weekend, so all the best to the kids. Next weekend we will have the last day of school.

After ISW school ends May 17 Sunday, we are offering FREE online classes almost everyday at 4 pm. If you need more info on ISW Masti please reach to Ruchi Chauhan at yvansh29@gmail.com or reach out to me (And if you reach to me , I will say, reach out to Ruchi, she is doing a awesome job!!).

Starting July, 2020 we will offer 6 more weeks of ISW Masti which will be Summer Camp type classes, details to be determined Math Tutoring, Public Speaking, Hindi Conversation etc Any input or ideas or volunteer offers, do reach out to Ruchi & myself

For September 2020, we will start taking registrations shortly The actual start date depends on the Shrewsbury School Calendar and our building completion schedule.

ISW Language school went online.

With the help of parent volunteers, who provided the technical support, we organized each class into 15 class-based WhatsApp groups for parent teacher communications and Zoom, WhatsApp Google Hangout, and Webex for online sessions. Our amazing teachers held individual online sessions at different times over the weekend and the response has been extremely positive.
